judge dread
June 26, 2007
A judge in england has let go of a man who raped a ten year old because in his opinion the victim dressed provocatively and looked older than her age. It seems the judge was pleading the rapists’s case. And wearing or not wearing clothes is enough of an invitation to rape and later on a justification by judges to set free the abuser. Strange times we live in.
time and tide wait for none. yash raj films is getting it now and how. two of their films have not done well in the recent past tara rum pum and jhoom baraabar jhoom and critics…mainstream and otherwise who wash the very ground the chopra fraternity walks on have taken out their knives. the story was different when the films were released. critics who don’t know their job or don’t know how and what to write wrote dull platitudes, praising this and that and criticizing nothing in general. one would assume that a classic was being reviewed. the box office said otherwise.
a new vocabulary is emerging post-failure. mostly do with the importance of good writing, scripts, screenplay, dialogues etc. can’t take these at face value and such righteous anger is amply being displayed. what happened when the film came out. all those preview tickets and press dockets must have impressed one and all.
what is happening in the process is that films which are a predominant part of indian culture are being wrongly interpreted. a form of art is being misinterpreted and torn to shreds. the rules of reviewing are being rewritten by the same guys and girls who have no right to write in the first place.
film reviewers in india are a strange lot. they don’t know where they standor what they stand for. for cinema, good cinema or indian cinema. are they film lovers? or lovers of indian cinema? we all know that indian cinema is different from hollywod etc. that we make 900 films a year (not bollywood but the entire country) etc etc. that our films can still take on the might of hollywood studios etc. we walk on the red and green carpets in cannes and every other festival but…
where does our glam rich, all talk, all song film stand? don’t know.
rather we know but we don’t want to accept the rung we are on. it’s time we realise that what we make is sometimes trash. no, not all the time. one would be a fool to say that the narrative tradition indian film makers follow is trash. it’s not and film history in india has enough examples to prove itself.
but what good is the narrative when the language, the grammar, the punctuation is non-existent?

as a precautionary measure devotees to the famous siddhivinayak temple in bombay have been asked to stop bringing into the sanctum sanctorum coconuts. they could be rigged by terrorists. intelligence reports suggest its imminent possibility. in some days no flowers people and then no people also. stay at home and pay your respects.
saw jhoom baraabar jhoom. nothing much to write home about. am listening to a very interesting compilation of music. right from 50’s to 06. it has bowie and moby, kaiser chefs, death cab, suzanne vega, neko case, delgados…great fun.
want to watch shivaji but its not possible to get tickets. rajni is a juggernaut that doesn’t stop. am doing some mind numbing work at office today. its easy but its so so boring. forget about it, get the cheque and have fun. a friend of mine has just gone to new york. he wrote that central park has wi-fi. he is checking out museums and galleries and working on his script. ah life!
an office laptop is playing floyd’s ‘wish you were here’. does anybody here know the lyrics of the song? i had it on good old tape in college. and i bought the tape thrice. why thrice? because all 3 times the roller ate into the tape. that was one album that always played truant.
has it happenend to others? must have. catching a film from exactly, i mean EXACTLY the same frame time and again. strange.
rushdie’s threat has woken up once again, this time because of his knighthood. how can you call a blasphemer by the title ’sir’? well sharpen your whatever for sir salman.
reccommended reading - short stories of h.g.wells and some of the stories TO BE READ and to be made into films
the country of the blind - terrence mallick
the door in the wall - terry gillian

two biggies hit the marquee today. sivaji and jhoom baraabar jhoom. one from mumbai and the other from down south. one is a tamil film and the other hindi. breaking and entering is also hitting bombay today. got bad reviews though. don’t know why anthony minghella has generally disappointed, other than the talented mr. ripley and of course truly, madly, deeply. constant gardener, the english patient were quite a drag. the scale is impressive, the acting is good and so are the other departments, but why is that nagging feeling…?
of course one can criticise it theoretically and philosophically, but one can use the cinema lovers instinct too and therein something of mr. ripley’s cold ruthlessness is wanted, not the cool, detached antiseptic pov of an educated, satiated aesthete. or the dionysian charm and excess of jude law from the same film.
as somebody has said…it doesn’t matter where your head falls as long as your heart is in its right place.

still hanging at office although there is no work. just because your superiors don’t leave you have to stick around. well thats life. umm. sweet child of mine on somebody’s laptop. what happened to the raspy axl rose? or to slash for that matter? they come and go.
there is no hindi music in the office although this is india and hindi is the national tongue. welcome to democaracy.
anyways without digressing why don’t people listen to hindi songs? the answer is few good songs are made. most of them are of the techno sort with some lines thrown in so that actors can lip synch them while they are dancing aroud trees or each other. not like in the olden days. great lyrics and memorable tunes. as my father says ‘those days are over’.
and this too shall pass
lets see
